    Adult Red Dragon Introduction

In the heart of the smoldering mountains, where the earth trembles with the heat of molten rock and the air is thick with the acrid scent of sulfur, lies the lair of the fearsome Adult Red Dragon. This majestic creature, a living embodiment of fire and fury, commands both awe and terror in equal measure. Its scales shimmer like molten rubies, each one a testament to its age and power, while its eyes burn with an inner fire that seems to pierce the very soul of those who dare to meet its gaze.

The Adult Red Dragon is a creature of immense size and strength, its wings spanning wide enough to blot out the sun as it soars through the sky. Its roar echoes like thunder across the valleys, a harbinger of destruction that sends even the bravest of adventurers into a cold sweat. With razor-sharp claws and teeth capable of rending steel, this dragon is a formidable opponent, driven by an insatiable greed for treasure and a fierce territorial instinct.

Red Dragons are known to inhabit volcanic regions, their lairs often nestled deep within the fiery caverns of active volcanoes or hidden amidst the jagged peaks of desolate mountain ranges. These lairs are filled with the spoils of countless raids, a hoard of gold and jewels that glitters enticingly in the flickering light of the dragon's fiery breath. The very air around these lairs is charged with heat, and the ground trembles with the dragon's presence.

Legends speak of the Red Dragon's cunning and intelligence, rivaled only by its arrogance and pride. It is said that these dragons can be bargained with, but only by those who approach with the utmost respect and caution. Many a tale has been told of heroes who sought to outwit a Red Dragon, only to find themselves ensnared in its fiery wrath. Yet, for those who succeed, the rewards are beyond measure, for the dragon's hoard is vast and its knowledge of ancient secrets unparalleled.

As you stand at the entrance to its domain, the oppressive heat and the distant rumble of the earth serve as a constant reminder of the power that lies within. The air is thick with tension, and every shadow seems to flicker with the promise of flame. Will you dare to face the might of the Adult Red Dragon, or will you turn back, leaving its treasures and its mysteries to remain hidden in the depths of the mountain?

    Actions

    • Multiattack: The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a target's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the target is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
    • Fire Breath (Recharge 5-6): The dragon exhales fire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Dexterity saving throw, taking 63 (18d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

    Legendary Actions

    • The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
    • Detect: The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
    • Tail Attack: The dragon makes a tail attack.
    • Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions): The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw or take 15 (2d6 + 8) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Battle Tips for an Adult Red Dragon

Red Dragons are among the most fearsome and powerful creatures in any fantasy setting. As a Dungeon Master, utilizing an Adult Red Dragon in battle can create a memorable and challenging encounter for your players. Here are some tips to effectively use this creature in your campaign:

Using the Adult Red Dragon in Battle

    • Leverage Its Environment: Red Dragons are typically found in mountainous or volcanic regions. Use the terrain to your advantage by having the dragon use its lair actions, such as causing tremors or creating lava flows, to disrupt and damage the party.
    • Utilize Its Flight: The dragon's ability to fly gives it a significant tactical advantage. Have it swoop down to attack and then retreat to the skies, forcing the party to adapt and find ways to bring it down.
    • Exploit Its Fire Breath: The dragon's fire breath is devastating. Use it strategically to target clustered party members or to cut off escape routes, maximizing its impact.

    Coordinating with Multiple Creatures

    • Allies and Minions: Consider having the dragon accompanied by fire-resistant creatures, such as fire elementals or salamanders, to support it in battle. These allies can engage the party while the dragon uses its mobility to strike from a distance.
    • Divide and Conquer: Use the dragon's intelligence to coordinate attacks with its allies, focusing on isolating and eliminating weaker party members first to reduce the group's overall effectiveness.

    Strategic Retreats

    • Know When to Flee: If the battle turns against the dragon, it should not hesitate to retreat. Use its speed and flight to escape to a safe distance, potentially regrouping with other dragons or allies for a counterattack.
    • Use Terrain to Escape: The dragon can use its knowledge of the terrain to escape through hidden passages or by causing rockslides to block pursuit, ensuring it lives to fight another day.

By using these strategies, a Dungeon Master can create a dynamic and challenging encounter with an Adult Red Dragon, testing the skills and tactics of any adventuring party.
