Adult Copper Dragon Introduction
As you venture deeper into the rugged hills, the air grows thick with the scent of earth and metal, a prelude to the presence of a creature both majestic and cunning. Before you stands an Adult Copper Dragon, its scales shimmering with a rich, burnished hue that catches the light like polished bronze. The dragon's eyes, a deep, intelligent amber, survey the landscape with a mixture of curiosity and mischief, hinting at the creature's playful yet unpredictable nature.
The Copper Dragon is a master of its domain, often choosing to make its lair in rocky, arid regions where the land rises and falls in a series of jagged peaks and hidden valleys. Here, amidst the craggy outcrops and sun-baked stones, the dragon finds solace and security, its presence a well-kept secret from the unobservant traveler. The lair itself is a marvel of natural architecture, with winding tunnels and spacious caverns that echo with the dragon's laughter and the clinking of its treasure hoard.
Known for its love of riddles and pranks, the Copper Dragon is as much a trickster as it is a guardian of its territory. Legends speak of travelers who have encountered the dragon, only to be challenged with puzzles and games, their passage granted only upon satisfying the dragon's whimsical demands. Yet, beneath its playful exterior lies a creature of deep wisdom and ancient knowledge, a keeper of secrets long forgotten by the world.
In the tales of old, the Copper Dragon is often depicted as a protector of the land, using its wit and elemental prowess to thwart those who would bring harm to its realm. Its breath, a searing line of acid, is a testament to its power, a weapon wielded with precision against those who dare to threaten its peace. Yet, for those who approach with respect and a willingness to engage in its games, the dragon can be a valuable ally, offering guidance and insight to those deemed worthy.
As you stand before this magnificent creature, the air crackles with anticipation, the promise of adventure and discovery hanging heavy in the atmosphere. The Copper Dragon watches you with a knowing smile, its presence a reminder of the wonders and mysteries that await those bold enough to seek them out.

- Frightful Presence: Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a target's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the target is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
- Breath Weapons (Recharge 5–6): The dragon uses one of the following breath weapons:
- Acid Breath: The dragon exhales acid in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Slowing Breath: The dragon exhales gas in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature can't use reactions, its speed is halved, and it can't make more than one attack on its turn. In addition, the creature can use either an action or a bonus action on its turn, not both. These effects last for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Legendary Actions
The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
- Detect: The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
- Tail Attack: The dragon makes a tail attack.
- Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions): The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Battle Tips for an Adult Copper Dragon
The Adult Copper Dragon is a cunning and playful creature, known for its love of pranks and riddles. In battle, it can be a formidable opponent, using its agility and intelligence to outmaneuver its foes. Here are some tips for Dungeon Masters on how to effectively use an Adult Copper Dragon in combat:
- Utilize the Terrain: Copper Dragons prefer rocky, mountainous regions. Use the terrain to your advantage by having the dragon take cover behind boulders or use elevation to gain a strategic advantage. The dragon's ability to climb and move through difficult terrain can be a significant asset.
- Leverage its Breath Weapon: The Adult Copper Dragon has two types of breath weapons: a line of acid and a cone of slowing gas. Use the acid breath to target tightly grouped enemies, and the slowing gas to hinder fast-moving or evasive opponents, giving the dragon and its allies more time to attack.
- Play with its Personality: Copper Dragons are known for their sense of humor. Incorporate this into battle by having the dragon taunt or confuse its enemies with riddles or jokes, potentially distracting them or causing them to make mistakes.
- Coordinate with Allies: If the dragon is part of a larger encounter, coordinate its attacks with other creatures. For example, have the dragon use its slowing gas to set up an ambush by other creatures, or use its flight to draw attention away from more vulnerable allies.
- Plan for Retreat: If the battle turns against the dragon, it can use its superior speed and climbing ability to retreat to a more defensible position. Consider having escape routes planned, such as narrow mountain passes or hidden caves, where the dragon can regroup or set up a new ambush.
By using these strategies, a Dungeon Master can create a dynamic and challenging encounter with an Adult Copper Dragon, making the most of its unique abilities and personality traits.
